Employment and Training Group
UCT’S Employment and Training Working Group (ETWG) formally started work in 2022 to respond to the findings of our most recent community survey in 2021, which ranked it as one of the top three priority issues after affordable housing.
Our working group has a great representation of professionals who work daily to improve job opportunities for people in the Highlands, including members from Highland Council, Skills Development Scotland, Highlife Highland, University of Highlands and Islands, Highland Third Sector Public Interface, Lochaber Chamber of Commerce as well as UCT.
At every meeting we get updates on existing and new initiatives, including funding and training, and plan how best to maximise access for the local community and connect actors to ensure the needs of Ullapool and Lochbroom are squarely on their radar.
An initiative already identified – and in action – is a pilot trial to see if we can engage all locals of working age in doing occasional shifts at local hospitality businesses to help them with the current staffing crisis. This followed a well-supported survey and a public crisis meeting at the ferry terminal to probe the factors responsible and what might help.
We have also secured funding from EDF Corriemoillie Wind Farm Education and Training fund towards training in essential skills to work in this sector. Hoping to roll this out from autumn 2022.
